Apple Crumble

Apple crumble and custard in a bowl. The apple crumble is golden brown, the apples, stewed nicely, the sultanas add darker patches, the custard is a pale creamy yellow.

Sometimes I like to make a crumble for breakfast!

Yup, I serve it with yogurt and it’s really not that much different from having breakfast cereal with fruit, except it’s warming and way better than cereal in winter. Except, as you can see, I ran out of yogurt, so unfortunately had to have this with custard this morning, what a shame 😃

For the crumble:

  • 200g plain flour
  • 100g unsalted butter
  • 80g sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons of double cream

Rub the butter into the flour, salt and sugar until combined and it looks like breadcrumbs. Add the cream and rub until the mixture is crumbly. Pop in the fridge for 30 minutes.

For the filling:

  • 2 Cooking Apples
  • A handful of sultanas
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon

You can choose whatever you like, but I do like this classic combination. Just chop up the apples, and sprinkle some sugar, sultanas and cinnamon in with them.

Then top with the crumble mix and bake for 30-35 minutes at 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6 until the fruit is bubbling and the topping golden!

That’s it, super easy and probably enough for 4 servings!

Of course there are many other options for fillings including rhubarb, gooseberries, pears, peaches, apple and blackberry, or any mix of these things. There are no rules, choose whatever you like, do you have a favourite?

Enjoy!
